🔥🎧Dying 4 Attention Pt 3
On Saturday, May 31st, Myioshi of T.E.E.S. and Deric Muhammad from SMART’N UP/URBAN BRIDGE hosted Part 3 of the Dying 4 Attention “Our Youth In Crisis” virtual workshop series, titled “Clicks, Clout & Consequences” The powerful session focused on the growing impact of social media on youth and the urgent need to invest real time and attention in children amid today’s many distractions.
Social Media’s Double-Edged Sword: Influence and Danger
Deric Muhammad led a compelling discussion on how social media shapes young people’s perceptions of popularity, fame, and self-worth. Highlighting alarming social media challenges—such as the Benadryl challenge and the blackout challenge—Deric shared real stories of tragic consequences resulting from risky online behavior. He stressed how children often mimic celebrity behavior, especially when lacking proper attention at home, underscoring the critical need for responsible adult guidance.
The Shift in Influence: From Family to Algorithms
The workshop explored how traditional family influence is being overshadowed by peer pressure and online strangers, with social media algorithms shaping what content youth see and how they behave. The group discussed the highs and lows of viral fame, including financial opportunities but also risks of exploitation. Experts emphasized teaching young people not only the rewards but also the real-world consequences of their digital actions.
Building Digital Integrity and Mindful Online Presence
Panelists, including Dr. Ty Warren, Jasper, and Norman Reed, stressed the importance of teaching youth about digital literacy, financial realities, and emotional well-being. The conversation focused on helping young people create a positive digital legacy, understanding that their online footprint impacts their future, from identity to employment prospects. The role of involved adults—especially fathers—and supportive communities was highlighted as essential in guiding youth toward healthier online behaviors.
Community as the Blueprint for Youth Behavior
A central theme was the decline of traditional community “villages” and the need to build focused, supportive networks that can positively influence young people. Adult behavior sets the blueprint for youth, and fostering community dialogue and support remains critical. The session concluded with plans for Part 4 of Dying 4 Attention, promising to dig deeper into how adult behavior shapes the next generation.
